When the tide comes surging into shore, what should be an easy path to the beach becomes suddenly impassable. At high tide, the water swallows the land around the bridge, making it look as though it’s stranded in the middle of a sea.

Built in 1878 to overcome mining subsidence, it is cross braced with iron ties. in 1963 pedestrianised, and is now the site of a Sunday market.

Housed in the Landmark, J R Rank Flour Mill building, its a major International centre for contemporary art. 2,600 square metres of art space, and boasts a rooftop restaurant with magnificent view of the River Tyne and Quayside.

The steel statue weighs 1.2 tonnes, and is 9 feet 5 inches tall. Depicting a WW1 soldier, wearing full uniform, sitting on an ammunition box. Referring to Archetype Tommy Atkins. '1101' refers to the 1st minute of peace in 1918.

St. Mary's Island was originally called Bates Island, Hartley Bates or Bates Hill as it was originally owned by the Bates family.

The lighthouse continued to function until 1984, when it was taken out of service. The lighthouse is now open to visitors.
